Division 1 Horticulture Awards & Trophies
Section B Standard Roses

All classes in Horticulture Section B are open to everyone. Roses should be shown in exhibition form unless otherwise noted. Entries within a single class will be divided into alphabetical order.

Class 101 – Hybrid Teas, Grandifloras, and their Climbing Counterparts – One-bloom-per-stem with no side buds. Awards: •Queen Trophy: Donated by Lou Long •King Trophy: Donated by Strange’s Nursery •Princess Trophy: Donated by Sheri Rose •Prince Trophy: Donated by Dr. & Mrs. Carl Cavallaro

Class 102 – Single and Semi-Double Hybrid Teas, Grandifloras or Floribundas – Naturally grown, with or without side buds. Trophy: Donated by Richmond Rose Society

Class 103 – Floribunda – One-bloom-per-stem, no side buds. Trophy: Donated by Willie & Joyce Mills

Class 104 – Floribunda Spray – One spray, two or more blooms, with or without side buds. Trophy: Donated by Dil & Anne Cook

Class 105 – Hybrid Tea or Grandiflora Spray – One spray, two or more blooms with or without side buds. Trophy: Donated by Julie Ashman

Class 106 – Full Blown Hybrid Tea or Grandiflora – Stamens showing, one bloom per stem without side buds. Exhibitors are permitted three entries in class if each is a different variety. Trophy: Donated by Suzanne Sizemore

Class 107 – Non-Exhibition Form Hybrid Tea Varieties – One-bloom-per-stem, no side buds. Non-exhibition form hybrid teas only - specimens with high centers will be disqualified. This class is intended for varieties with OGR or shrub form. Trophy: Donated by Lynn Pappas

Class 108-1 – Varieties of OGR in Existence Prior to 1867 – These roses are eligible for the Dowager Queen Award, which is awarded to the best of the blue ribbon winners. The notation “Prior to 1867” must be entered on the top of the entry tag. One-bloom-per-stem as naturally grown, with or without side buds or one naturally grown spray. Trophy: Donated by Rick Brown

Class 108-2 – Varieties of OGR in 1867 or Later – These roses are eligible for the Victorian Rose Award, which is awarded to the best of the blue ribbon winners. The notation “1867 or later” must be entered on the top of the entry tag. One-bloom-per-stem as naturally grown, with or without side buds or one naturally grown spray. Trophy: Donated by the Rick Brown

Class 108-3 – Species varieties of OGR regardless of introduction date. – These roses are eligible for the Genesis Award Trophy. One-bloom-per-stem as naturally grown, with or without side buds or one naturally grown spray. Trophy: Donated by (Cedar Grove) circa 1820 Judy Durant

Class 109 – Large Flowered Climbers and Hybrid Wichuraiana – Climbers other than climbing sports of hybrid teas, grandifloras, floribundas, and polyanthas. Ramblers as classified by the American Rose Society. One- bloom-per-stem, with or without side buds; or one naturally- grown spray with two or more blooms. Trophy: Donated by Willie & Joyce Mills

Class 110A – Modern Shrubs. –Shrub varieties classed as “shrubs” by the ARS. Modern Shrubs are designated by an “S” classification in the Handbook of Modern Roses. One- bloom-per-stem with or without side buds, or one naturally- grown spray. Trophy: Lisa Caperton

Class 110B – Classic Shrubs. –Shrub varieties classed as “shrubs” by the ARS. Classic Shrubs are those classified as hybrid musk, hybrid rugosa, hybrid Kordesii. One-bloom-per- stem with or without side buds, or one naturally-grown spray. Trophy: Donated by Donated by Susan & Joyce Bingham

Class 111 – Polyantha Spray – One naturally-grown spray of two or more blooms—includes climbing sports. Trophy: Donated by Lynn Pappas

Class 112 – Rose in a Bowl – Any rose bloom other than a miniature at exhibition stage, no foliage, floating in a bowl furnished by the Show Committee. Supply of bowls is limited—bowls are available on a first-come, first served basis. One bowl per exhibitor. Trophy: Donated by Carol Fox

Class 113 – English Box – Six hybrid teas or grandifloras of no more than two of the same variety, evenly matched, displayed in a box. Supply of boxes is limited—boxes are provided on a first come, first-served basis. Exhibitors may provide their own box. Trophy: Donated by Carol Fox

Class 114-1 – Novice: Hybrid Teas and Grandifloras – One bloom per stem, no side buds. This class is for exhibitors who have never won a blue ribbon in an ARS sanctioned show. Exhibitors are allowed three entries per Novice subclass if each is a different variety. A single Novice trophy will be awarded to the best of the blue ribbon entries in class 114-1, 114-2, and 114-3. These entries are ineligible for any other awards. Trophy: Donated by Kitty Sampson

Class 114-2 – Novice: Floribunda Spray – One spray, two or more blooms, with or without side buds. This class is for exhibitors who have never won a blue ribbon in an ARS sanctioned show. Exhibitors are allowed three entries per Novice subclass if each is a different variety. A single Novice trophy will be awarded to the best of the blue ribbon entries in class 114-1, 114-2, and 114-3. These entries are ineligible for any other awards. Trophy: Donated by Betsy Mead

Class 114-3 – Novice: Miniatures – One-bloom-per-stem, no Side buds. This class is for exhibitors who have never won a blue ribbon in an ARS sanctioned show. Exhibitors are allowed three entries per Novice subclass if each is a different variety. A single Novice trophy will be awarded to the best of the blue ribbon entries in class 114-1, 114-2, and 114-3. These entries are ineligible for any other awards. Trophy: Donated by Julie Ashman

Class 115 1-5 – Fragrance Awards – One bloom-per-stem with no side buds. Roses with the best form 1/2 to 3/4 open are eligible to receive blue ribbons. No other ribbons will be awarded. The blue ribbon winner with the most distinctive fragrance will receive a trophy.

•Class 115-5 – Fragrant Old Garden Rose Trophy: Donated by Don & Sue Penzler

Class 116 – Painter’s Palette – Five floribundas all different varieties, evenly matched, at exhibition stage and no foliage. Exhibitors should emphasize a variety of colors. Palettes are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Trophy: Donated by George & Mildred Jackson

Class 117 – New Seedling or Sport – One bloom or spray grown by the exhibitor, that has not been registered. A card containing the growth habits and parentage (if known) to be placed with the exhibit. Trophy: Donated by Barry & Lee Anne & Declan Boyd

What is a Sport? Sports are mutations that occur on rose bushes. The sport mutation may produce a rose of a different color, different foliage characteristics, a reblooming branch on an otherwise once- blooming variety, or a climbing variety from a rose with a typical bush growth habit.
